Purpose : Photobiomodulation also known as low-level laser therapy, has been proposed as a promising, non-invasive, therapeutic approach for retinal degenerative diseases including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and retinitis pigmentosa. In recent years, the source of photon using LEDs has become common; however, only few studies of the LED-based photobiomodulation have been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of photobiomodulation using 670 nm LED on the prevention of retinal degeneration.
Methods : For 670 nm light irradiation, a LED-based device equipment with 670 nm LED panel, semiconductor-cooling unit, and light intensity controller was constructed. For retinal degeneration, mice were injected intraperitoneally with NaIO3. the retinal degeneration was evaluated by assessing the thickness of the retinal outer nuclear layer, photoreceptor cell death, expression of rhodopsion and opsin proteins, expression of the inflammatory cytokine genes, and reactive gliosis of muller glia.
Results : The irradiation of 670 nm LED light to retina injured by NaIO3-induced rusulted in an increase in outer nuclear layer thickness, inhibition of photoreceptor cell death, upregulation of rhodopsion and opsin proteins, and the inflammatory cytokine genes, and suppression in reactive gliosis of muller glia.
Conclusion : This study suggests that 670 nm LED-based photobiomodulation prevents effectively photoreceptor cell degeneration, and provides a new strategy for the therapy of retinal degenerative diseases.
